Frequently Asked Questions

How do a I get a prescription for speech therapy and what should I take into account?

In order to receive speech therapy, you need a prescription from your physician.

Speech therapy may be prescribed, among others, by pediatricians (“Kinderarzt”), Ear, Nose & Throat Doctors (“HNO-Arzt”), phoniatrist (“Phoniater”), pediatric audiologists (“Pädaudiologe”), orthodontists (“Kieferorthopäde”), dentists (“Zahnarzt”), general practitioners (“Allgemeinmediziner”), primary care physicians (“Hausarzt”) and neurologists (“Neurologe”).

Please bring the prescription to your first appointment.

For children and youths, a current hearing test (no more than three months old) must be presented with the prescription. Please note that no more than 28 days may pass between the date of issue on the prescription (“Ausstellungsdatum”) and the first speech therapy appointment.

We recommend first making an appointment with us and picking up the prescription from your doctor shortly before the first appointment.

We are happy to support you with any further questions regarding the prescription.

Who is responsible for the costs of treatment?

In Germany, speech therapy is paid for by your health insurance company.

Adults with public health insurance must cover a co-pay of 10%, as well as a prescription fee of 10€.

If you are exempt from co-payment (“von Zuzahlungen befreit”), these fees do not apply.

Children and youths up to 18 years of age are exempt from co-payment.

In the case of private health insurance, the amount covered varies depending on the individual insurance contract and provider.

We will create a cost estimate before the start of treatment so that you can clarify payment options with your insurance provider.

How long is speech therapy?

One prescription usually encompasses 10 units of speech therapy.

Depending on the prescription, each session is 30, 45 or 60 minutes long.

Generally, therapy takes place once or twice a week.

When the prescription is completed, we will decide together, whether a new prescription is necessary.
